Human-Centered Design (HCD) for Social Innovation Workshop

This hands-on course equips social change actors with Human-Centered Design (HCD) skills to co-create meaningful, inclusive, and impactful solutions. Grounded in empathy and powered by iteration, HCD helps organizations design with, not for communities, ensuring programs are relevant, responsive, and ready to scale.

• Introduce the mindsets, tools, and stages of the Human-Centered Design process.
• Build capacity to engage communities meaningfully in problem-solving.

Course Modules

Module 1: Introduction to Human-Centered Design
– Explore the mindsets and stages of HCD—from empathy to iteration.
– Understand how HCD transforms traditional approaches to development and innovation.

Module 2: Framing the Problem
– Learn to define user-centered problem statements rooted in real community challenges.
– Use framing tools to avoid assumptions and broaden solution space.

Module 3: Deep Listening and Empathy Building
– Practice techniques such as empathy interviews, journey mapping, shadowing, and observation.
– Gain insights into user behavior, pain points, and aspirations.

Module 4: Ideation and Concept Development
 -Use creative tools like brainstorming, “how might we” questions, and synthesis maps.
-Develop solution ideas that are bold, inclusive, and grounded in user insights.

Module 5: Prototyping for Learning
– Learn how to build quick, low-fidelity prototypes to bring ideas to life.
– Test assumptions early and gather actionable feedback without heavy investment.

Module 6: Testing, Feedback, and Iteration
– Engage users to test prototypes, capture insights, and refine solutions.
– Build resilience through failure, feedback loops, and continuous improvement.

Module 7: Embedding HCD in Organizational Practice
– Explore strategies to make HCD part of your team culture and workflows.
– Understand how to build internal capacity and shift from output to outcome-focused design.

Module 8: Measuring Social Innovation Impact
– Design learning plans, indicators, and evaluation tools that reflect usability, relevance, and long-term change.
– Link human-centered approaches with adaptive M&E frameworks.

Course Duration:

5-day interactive in-person workshop or

10-15 days virtual learning experience with applied fieldwork and coaching.
